The Kind of Gold

Gold is a very durable and desirable metal that does not corrode, rust, or tarnish over time. Gold has been used for jewelry for hundreds of years. It is a metal that is very malleable and can be melted and shaped for any sort of jewelry piece. Because of its malleability, gold in its purest form is not suitable for jewelry wearing. It is therefore alloyed with other metals to make it stronger and more durable for jewelry wear.

Gold content in metal is measured in terms of karats. Pure gold is 100% gold and is referred to as 24 karat gold. When this pure gold is alloyed with other metals like silver, copper or nickel, the gold percentage decreases which also means the karat number decreases. With this decrease in gold percentage, the strength of the metal increases which means for example that 14 karat gold is stronger than 18 karat gold.

The most common gold in the United States is 10 karat and 14 karat. It is mostly used in jewelry such as rings and necklaces. The next level of gold is 16 karat which is primarily used in teeth fillings. 18 karat jewelry is most popular in Southern Europe and the Middle East. The following level of 21 karat and 22 karat are found mostly in India and the South Asian region. China and the Far East have the highest level of gold going all the way up to 24 karat.
